A Muslim schoolboy was slapped by classmates at a private school in Muzaffarnagar on 24 August 2023, allegedly on teacher Tripta Tyagi’s instructions. A recording prompted complaints about communal remarks and corporal punishment. Tyagi denied a communal motive and said the recording misrepresented her words.
In proceedings brought by Tushar Gandhi, the Supreme Court on 12 December 2024 required Uttar Pradesh to take further steps against punishment and discrimination in schools. It said merely providing a grievance mechanism was inadequate unless parents knew about it. The state’s lawyer undertook to correct its position on a provision of the Right to Education Act.
The judges stressed equality, secularism and fraternity as part of quality education and required a compliance affidavit. This was a school-safeguards proceeding, not a criminal conviction of the teacher. The child’s identity is withheld here, and the dated order is not presented as proof that every required reform was implemented.
