Pehlu Khan was assaulted near Behror in Rajasthan on 1 April 2017 while returning from a cattle fair with others, including his sons. The attackers accused the group of cattle smuggling. Khan died two days later.

An Alwar court acquitted six adult accused in August 2019, giving them the benefit of doubt and identifying serious investigative shortcomings. Rajasthan challenged that decision. On 6 September 2021, the High Court admitted the family’s appeal and joined it with the state’s challenge.
