The demolition of a mosque inside Saharanpur's collectorate complex in Uttar Pradesh has prompted objections over whether an eviction decision authorised destruction of the building. District authorities razed the structure on September 5, following the rejection of an appeal against an order to vacate land they said belonged to the government.
Mosque custodian Tanveer Ahmed argued that eviction and demolition were different actions and challenged the procedure used. City magistrate Kuldeep Singh defended the administration's interpretation that removal of the premises followed from eviction. The dispute concerns both the occupation of the site and the legal authority for the demolition; an eviction ruling does not by itself establish that every subsequent administrative action was lawful.
In a September 8 statement, Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind said a delegation had met affected people and lawyers and was gathering documents to consider further legal action. It criticised the speed of the demolition. Those statements describe a proposed legal response, not a completed court challenge or a judicial finding that the demolition was unlawful.
